Lymphoedema is the medical terms which describes the symptoms of swelling that can occur anywhere in the body, however, most commonly it affects the arms and legs but is can sometimes occur in the body.

Lymphoedema

What is lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is defined as the excessive accumulation of tissue fluid (or 'lymph') that results from impaired lymphatic drainage and the term 'lymphoedema' should be confined to describing oedema in patients in whom a lymphatic abnormality has been confirmed. Lymphoedema can affect anyone at any age and can affect any part of the body. Although it is not life-threatening it can be very distressing and can become a major physical and social problem. There is no cure at present, but with appropriate treatment and the patients co-operation it can be kept under control.

Lymphoedema is classified as either Primary or Secondary; this depends on the initial cause of the condition.

Primary Lymphoedema:
Primary lymphoedema relates to abnormal functioning of the lymphatic system. The individual may either be born with it or develop the condition later on in life.

Secondary Lymphoedema:
Secondary Lymphoedema may occur following post cancer treatment, radiation therapy, surgery, infections or trauma.

It is important to note that if either types of lymphoedema are left untreated, there is a high possibility that the symptoms may get worse over time.

Your symptoms of Lymphoedema may include:

  • Inflammation or swelling
  • Lowered immunity in affected areas
  • Restrictive moment of the joints
  • Aching and tired legs

What are the complications of lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema reduces the effectiveness of the tissue to clear the fluid, this in turn may cause a build up of bacteria which can get into the skin or subcutaneous tissues from a minor trauma or scratch. This could lead to infection. The infection which results is called cellulitis. It is unfortunate that with each episode of cellulitis lymphatic vessels are damaged further. Avoidance of infections is therefore important.

It is Very rare that after many years of lymphoedema, a malignant tumour of the lymph vessels can occur.

Lymphoedema after cancer treatment

Common areas for lymphoedema to occur after cancer treatment are:

  • In the leg if cancer or your post treatment affects nodes in the groin area or the pelvis
  • In the arm after breast cancer treatment to the armpit area

The arm or leg may become stiff, uncomfortable or even swollen and difficult move, this may make ordinary dialy tasks pain and difficult to undertake. Lymphoedema may develop weeks, months or even years after cancer treatment.

Lymphoedema is usually found in an arm or leg, however, other you may also suffer from swollen areas in other parts of the body.

What can I do to reduce my symptoms associated with Lymphoedema?

The Circulation Booster® is registered as a medical device in the UK and thousands of customers have already benefited from either the home or mobile devices. It is specifically designed to increase the blood circulation, which targets the lower leg region and other areas where lymphoedema may occur. The electro-pads which are included within your purchase can be placed on areas where lymphoedema may arise such as your arms. The electro-pads causes the muscles to contract and release which will reduce the swelling in that area. They're simple to use and you can re-apply the pads as they have adhesive sticky backs.

The Circulation Booster® sends out electrical impulses, which induces muscle stimulation in the feet, lower legs and targeted muscle groups. Muscles contract and release to pump the blood and improve circulation. To help with fluid build up (lymphoedema) within the arm area, there are electrode pads whican be attached to specific muscles groups which will help with muscle stimulation and circulation of the arm area. This will help alleviate the pain and reduce the swollen areas.

Poor circulation can provide much discomfort including swelling, pain and numbness. By improving the blood circulation in the legs, the risks of these problems are significantly reduced.

What results can you expect if you suffer from lymphoedema?

Clinical studies support this method of application. It has been shown that the use of muscle stimulation of the feet, the calf, and targeted muscle areas can:

  • Improve circulation and reduce pain and swelling
  • Improve muscle strength and reduce wastage
  • Reduce swollen muscle
  • Increase energy levels and reduce stress
  • Aid fast recovery from muscular injury
  • Improve wellbeing and mobility
  • Alleviate tired and aching legs
  • Reduce swelling and fluid retention associated with Lymphoedema. The gloves are especially helpful post surgery when there may be a build up of fluid. The EMS signals will cause your muscles to contract and release which will improve circulation in the arm region
